Diagnosis

Before one can be diagnosed with epilepsy, a physician will perform a variety of tests in order to accurately determine whether or not the individual has epilepsy and the cause of the seizures. This section will address how epilepsy is diagnosed, as well as the tests that are performed to diagnose epilepsy.
Electroencephalogram (EEG)
An EEG, or electroencephalogram, is one of the available tests for epilepsy. This simple and painless test will tell your doctor if you are having abnormal brain activity and the origin of that activity.
What Is a Lumbar Puncture?
What is a lumbar puncture? A spinal tap, also known as a lumbar puncture, is a procedure that examines the fluid that bathes the brain and spinal cord. A lumbar puncture may be able to determine if an infection, inflammation, or a tumor is the source of your seizures.
How Is Epilepsy Diagnosed?
Usually, a complex workup for epilepsy is performed after you have had your first seizure. There are many tests for epilepsy your healthcare provider will perform. This article will discuss epilepsy, seizures, the diagnosis of epilepsy, and the diagnosis of seizures.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a procedure used to examine structures in the brain. If you are experiencing seizures and your healthcare provider suspects that it might be due to a lesion in your brain, an MRI may help to investigate this.
Electroencephalogram
An electroencephalogram, or EEG, is used to help diagnose epilepsy by looking at your brain activity while you are having a seizure.
Computed Tomography Scan (CT Scan)
A CT scan may be used to help diagnose your epilepsy. It is used to visualize the brain and to check whether or not a lesion or mass in the brain may be involved in causing your seizures.
Lumbar Puncture
A lumbar punction, or spinal tap, may be used to investigate the cause of your seizures - especially if your seizures may be caused by an infection of the brain. During this procedure, cerebral spinal fluid, or the fluid that bathes the brain, is collected.
