Definition: A grand mal seizure is a type of seizure that consists of a tonic and clonic phase, which can appear as violent jerking of the entire body.

The person experiencing the this type of seizure is not aware of their surroundings.

Grand mal seizures are also known as generalized tonic-clonic seizures.
